Puzzle
All the More Beautiful
Life is like a puzzle.
I wonder who first said that.
I think I first heard those words about ten years ago.
Someone close to me once told me about a scene in a jigsaw puzzle: a ship caught in a storm.
Looking at that scene alone, the ship seemed to be in terrible danger, surrounded by raging waves. But if you stepped back and looked at the entire puzzle as a picture of life, the storm was only a tiny part of something much bigger.
And it was that very scene, I was told, that made the whole picture even more beautiful.
I remember thinking, Of course. Life really could be like a puzzle.
But there’s one big difference between a puzzle and life.
When we choose a puzzle, we already know what the finished picture looks like. We find one we love and set out to put it together.
With life, we have no way of knowing exactly how the picture will turn out.
Maybe that’s why the future can feel so uncertain, and sometimes so frightening.
But what if life really did work like a puzzle? Wouldn’t that be wonderful?
If we could see the finished picture, wouldn’t it be easier to keep going, even when the pieces were difficult to fit together?
I think some of the hardest moments in life are those when we can’t see an end in sight.
Even in the darkest tunnel, a tiny light in the distance can give us hope. As long as we can see that light, we have something to walk toward.
But when all we see is darkness, with no idea how much farther we have to go, every step feels that much harder.
Imagine trying to complete a 5,000-piece puzzle without ever seeing the picture on the box.
Where would you even begin?
A 50-piece puzzle might be easy enough without a picture to guide you. But with thousands of pieces, it’s a different story.
The finished picture.
Something to guide us forward.
What could give us that sense of direction in life?
For me, it’s a dream.
A dream gives me a picture of the life I want to create. And with that picture in mind, I can begin putting the little pieces of today into place.
Just as choosing a puzzle that’s too difficult might make us want to give up before we even begin, our dreams don’t have to be enormous from the start.
We can begin with a small dream, something within reach. Then, with the joy and confidence that come from achieving it, we can dare to dream a little bigger.
And little by little, those dreams grow.
Perhaps one day we’ll find ourselves dreaming of things we never imagined possible.
A puzzle for my teens, another for my twenties, another for my thirties….
All those different pictures, slowly coming together to form the bigger picture of my life.
And so, each morning, I wake up with a dream.
What part of my puzzle will I work on today?
I begin the day thinking about the little pieces I’d like to put into place.
A day goes by. Then a month. Then a year….
Some pieces find their places through patience and hard work. Others get pushed aside, waiting to be picked up, until we suddenly realize how many we’ve left unfinished.
Of course, I might put a piece in the wrong place or regret choosing a puzzle that turned out to be much harder than I expected.
There may be storms that frighten me, and moments when I feel utterly alone in the middle of a vast sea.
But if all those moments are part of the beautiful picture I’m creating with my life….
Then I’ll gladly face the wind and the waves.
Instead of turning away in fear, I’ll sail through them and keep moving forward.
Because there’s still a dream I’m determined to reach.
And someday, when I come to the end of my journey,
I hope I can look back at the puzzle I’ve completed
and smile quietly….

How “All the More Beautiful” Came to Life
More than ten years ago, a brief conversation with someone close to me sparked an idea that never quite left me.
I told that person I wanted to write an essay about it someday. I even had a title in mind: Puzzle.
But somehow, the essay remained unwritten.
Then, not long ago, I turned that old idea into a song instead.
Thoughts I’d carried with me for years became lyrics, melodies, and paintings, gradually coming together as one finished work.
And I gave the song as a gift to the very person who had shared that conversation with me all those years ago.
It felt as though a puzzle piece I’d been holding onto for more than a decade had finally found its place.
“그래서 더 아름다워” — All the More Beautiful.
Perhaps this song is another little piece of the puzzle I’m still putting together.
